E-Leadership Portfolio

The Citadel's E-Leadership Portfolio is a four-year, campus-wide initiative designed to document undergraduate students' principled leadership and assess their leadership knowledge, competency, and growth over time. The electronic portfolio also serves as a powerful mechanism for assessing general education learning outcomes, program-level assessment, and informs institutional continuous improvement efforts. The majority of the E-Leadership Portfolio artifacts use the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) VALUE rubrics to assess student performance and growth over time. While the driving purpose of the E-Leadership Portfolio is assessment of student learning outcomes, students certainly derive a significant benefit from having a sophisticated E-Leadership Portfolio available to demonstrate to potential employers, military boards, and graduate schools.  

The E-Leadership Portfolios are developed and managed using TaskStream's Learning Achievement Tools (LAT).

Portfolio Design and Assessments

The E-Leadership Portfolio is designed to mirror The Citadel's leadership development model, which is organized within four over-arching pillars: the academic pillar, moral and ethical pillar, military pillar, and physical effectiveness pillar. Assessment activities within the electronic portfolio are embedded within each pillar. 

For example, the freshman portfolio includes the following assessments:

  • Academic Pillar: A career development self-assessment is embedded, requiring students to complete five exercises including examination of their academic strengths, skills, personality assessment, work interests, and career planning interests. The portfolio also includes a writing assessment where students identify and describe an inspirational leader they have encountered at The Citadel. This assessment is evaluated using rubrics for written communication as well as leadership content knowledge. 
  • Moral and Ethical Pillar: An ethical reasoning scenario-based assignment is integrated within the portfolio and is evaluated using an ethical reasoning rubric.  The Citadel's annual Honor Test is also housed within the portfolio, assessing content knowledge of the institution's honor policies.
  • Military Pillar: The military pillar includes a teamwork assignment on ethics that is evaluated using a teamwork skills rubric. 
  • Physical Effectiveness Pillar: Within the physical effectiveness pillar, students record their physical fitness test scores, height/weight standards, and complete a health assessment measuring content knowledge about healthy behaviors and binge drinking, evaluated against an institutionally designed rubric.
