  • There is an average of 207,754 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year. This works out to about one victim every two minutes in the United Stated. In 2010, across SC, There were 1,439 cases of forcible rape reported to law enforcement. (
  • Approximately 2/3 of rapes were committed by someone known to the victim.
  • It is estimated that 1 of every 6 women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. (

  • In 2001, South Carolina ranked first in the nation with the highest homicide rate for female victims by male offenders. South Carolina's rate for this type of homicide is more than twice the national average.
  • About 3% of American men — or 1 in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. (
  • Victims of sexual assault are:
    • 3 times more likely to suffer from depression.
    • 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
    • 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol.
    • 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.
    • 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.(
  • Rape is called "the most underreported violent crime in America." In a large national survey of American women, only 16% of the rapes (approximately one out of every six) had ever been reported to the police. (Rape in America: A Report to the Nation, National Victim Center, 1992)
  • As many as one-third of all high school and college-age young people experience violence in an intimate or dating relationship. Physical abuse is as common among high school and college-age couples as married couples.
  • Approximately 40% of sexual assaults take place in the survivor's home. About 20% occur in the home of a friend, neighbor, or relative. 10% occur outside, away from home. About 8% take place in parking garages.
  • More than half of all rape and sexual assault incidents occurred within one mile of the survivor's home or in her home.
  • In 29% of rapes, the offender used a weapon.
  • 73% of those forced to have sex fail to recognize their experience as rape.
